There is significant schadenfreude in knowing the New York Yankees will have to pay A-Rod tens of millions of dollars for hitting .163. There would certainly be a lot of outrage if a Wall Street banker was getting that kind of money and produced that kind of result.
But, because selective outrage, Americans seem to disproportionately admire athletes that earn more money at a single at-bat than most of us earn for an entire year.
Similarly, despite President Obama's professed intention to strengthen the Middle Class and take care of the poor, he seems to be most comfortable in the presence of highly paid athletes and Hollywood types like George Clooney, most of whom, wouldn't know a middle class person if they were punched in the face by one.
Clooney, John Stewart, Bill Mahar--millionaires all. They can afford to support Obama's policies. Their rich elite status provides immunity to any disastrous policies undertaken by the President.
This may be particularly demonstrated by John Stewart who does not seem to know the difference between the "budget deficit" and U.S. debt.
Too bad about those of us who work every day for a living.
